True Friendship

True Friendship

R’ Moshe Leib of Sassov teaches how he learned
from a gentile villager about

ואהבת לרעך כמוך “V’ahavta Rey’echa Ka’mocha”
love your neighbor as yourself.

Once, when he was at a gathering with some
villagers, he observed one of the villagers feeling a bit
giddy with wine, and overheard him asking his friend,
“Do you love me?”
The latter replied, “Certainly I love you,
I love you like a brother”

The first shook his head and insisted
“You say you love me!
You don’t love me.
If you loved me you’d know what I need!”

At this the friend fell silent,
He had nothing to say.
